It’s too early for me to say anything about Axel, since he’s still in the “planning” stage.

During my previous work with him, I repeatedly noticed that they all have "Echoes" of their originals, and in this case,
for Axel it was that very shot of the stand with pepper. Who became my second test subject (the first was Blaze, but more about her later)

Continuing with the topic of Axel, now I have thoughts about his face and hair. Oh, and his hand

Oh wow, this looks great! It's exactly the kind of thing I hoped for the SoR 1 characters ^_^

Honestly, this is on par with (maybe even better than) SoRR's SoR1 Axel. Very nice work.
 
@lanyer Hmm I think it's correct, if compared with the original +125% it matches similar proportions.

I'm sorry to disappoint you, I felt the same when I saw that Sega recycled some SOR2 sprites in the Bare Knuckle Mobile. Honestly I expected a complete rework based on the first game but using the SOR2/3 proportions.

However, this Axel in fact makes sense because I'm trying to stick with as many original sprites as possible. So, considering that the BKM is an official Sega remake of the SOR1, I'm just following the original content and putting BKM characters in the SOR1 route.

Indeed we are very lucky to have this BKM game and the amazing @Mr.Hunter edits, otherwise we may never have a SOR1 route in the SORX, or maybe I would have even stopped at the old SOR2X since the BKM existence was one of my main motivations to keep developing the entire trilogy.

I'm still doing many adjustments to make him different from the Axel2, but I confess that it's not easy 😅
And like I said in a previous post, I can maybe add more variants with different sprites in future updates.

Though this gif comparison, the conclusion becomes more obvious. Compare the distance between the eyes and the right toe (height), and the distance between the hips and the left knee (width). The new height is slightly smaller by 2-3 pixels, but the width is 1-2 pixels more. This is why I feel Axel's left thigh looks a bit longer than it should be.

@Mr.Hunter In general it's good but looks like the BKM version is doing a minor jump at a different pace during the run if compared with the SORR.

Nice concept :) Although I believe it needs a bit more work, this was really a good start.
I think most differences between Axel1 and Axel2 are related to the head/face in general. The body could even keep the BKM/SOR2 with minor changes.

But don't worry too much for now, you already did an amazing job with the BKM version and I will proceed using him. In addition, I will finish BKM Blaze/Adam first before adding other characters.
 
@Mr.Hunter A quick draft, something like this is what I was talking about. I just changed the head but look how it impacts the entire design, the face still is based on the BKM version from the "walking" animation and I only drew the hair in the SOR1 format.

I'm doing some tests, if everything works fine I will change the head/face in the entire spritesheet.

I'm doing some tests, if everything works fine I will change the head/face in the entire spritesheet.

I didn’t really think about this head option, but it looks interesting.
It looks like I still have a lot to learn.

This Axel looks much more unique than the one in the SOR1 Axel test video. I really like the change.

From a visual perspective, the thighs seem a bit too long,right?
The right thigh looks good and the left thigh looks a little longer than it should. That be an optical illusion though and I don't think the sprite maker should worry about this.

Things start to get little strange with the left shin bending at that angel relative the knee. The left foot is bent in a straight profile pov. Axel's Head is also in straight profile pov but in the opposite direction of the left shin.

I don't think Mr Hunter needs to worry about these things since it would be a nightmare trying fix these old sprites and it would mess with charm of the original sprite work.

In all, Mr. Hunter is doing great work.
 
I can say that this is more or less what I expected from Sega about the BKM Axel.

I made a few more improvements using @Mr.Hunter sprites as base. Completely changed head/hair/face to look closer to the original SOR1, plus I added the original kick at the end of the default combo.

Basically he is a mix of the BKII Beta + BKM + SOR1 Axel versions. I used the BKII Beta moves because since this game is like a transition between the first and second titles (kind of SOR 1.5) and both are deeply connected, some ideas can fit in a SOR1 rework.

In addition, the BKII sprites used in the SOR2 Axel have different mechanics, like the GG style uppercut and the spinning kick used by the aerial special.

In short:
  • all the main sprites used as base are from BKM
  • counter attack from BKM (the "tiger knee")
  • super attack from BKM (used the jumping attack sprite for that)
  • defensive special from BKII Beta
  • "half" of the forward special from BKII/SOR2
  • aerial special from SOR1/SOR3 team attack
  • static jumping attack from BKII Beta (the knee only, without the kick)
  • ground upper from BKII Beta ("shoryuken" style)
  • forward jumping attack from SOR1
  • default combo's last kick from SOR1
  • grabbing attack style from the original SOR1 (no double knee/headbutt), plus with a new low punch
  • throw/slam from the original SOR1
  • rage attack is an edit I made based on a custom ground upper made by Luke K.
I'm still doing more fixes/updates but at least the base structure is fine.

Does he/will he have any unique weapon-based stuff? (Blitz, special, alternate way to swing, etc.). It's always fun to discover a character uses certain weapons differently and stuff :)

Yeah, I'm planning to make some custom weapon moves, maybe based on the baseball bat once there's no sword originally in the SOR1.
