yo Gabo! I watched the video too and it looks so cool and fresh man. Can't wait to play it and have a blast whipping on some foot soldiers with Raph and Donny.

Yo Hanzo!! Thanks a lot bro!! How do you know they call me Gabo? lol. Well, I feel like I should probably release a DEMO pretty soon now. I have made some significant progress but I feel like the game is not ready yet, however, feedback is always appreciated. A demo will always be the best way to get feedback.

So, I decided to add some shading to the sprites I'm using for my MOD. As much as I love the original NES game, the colors were very limited. I'm not doing anything crazy, it's just a simple cartoon-shading that makes the sprites look nicer and not as flat as before. So far, only Leonardo, Raphael, Bebop and Rocksteady are done. Here's a picture. Obviously, the ones on the top are the original NES sprites, the ones in the middle are the one I recolored and then the ones on the bottom are the ones with the cartoon shading. This is gonna take some time but it will definitely be worth it.

Nice, it will be worth it for sure.  8)  Bebop & Rocksteady palettes are perfect thou, don't change those ;)

Just a heads up, normally sprites have shadow as if light is coming from the front, but you've made it from behind.  I suck at shading myself, been trying to get better at it.  I dunno if it's really an issue, but I remember reading that most games sprites have light source from the front.

We're going to have to add all the shadowing, and that goes where the light is not coming from. If you imagine the light is a can of spray paint and you spray it in the sprites direction from a static position in the top left (or top right), the parts that get colored with the spray paint are the parts the light hits, and the shadows should be the parts the paint doesn't reach - where the light does not fall directly.

Dude, that was my intention, to have to light coming from the front. Perhaps I'm not that good at shading either. Usually the sprites have one leg in the front and another one in the back, the one in the back is the one with the shading. Thanks for the heads-up, though. It seems I still got more work to do.

Hmm the torso and legs seem correct.  Just the faces I noticed, the shadow should be on the back of their heads I think.

Best to work on them facing right like they do by default in openbor.

That thing I quoted I thought was a good rule of thumb for imagining where to put shadow.

EDIT:

I just realized you could kinda copy the shading from the original arcade game.  It would suit these.

For example here's a version of foot clan using your palette.

And you could do something roughly like this -

Mine sucks but you get what I mean.

Noooo dude, yours doesn't suck. I do get what you mean. I like the first one you did because it looks more like a cartoon. I think I will change the direction of the light but just for their faces. Thanks once again Beastie!

After previously sprite editing 3 sheets of those arcade foot clan, I kinda had a good idea how they were shaded already. ;)

BTW my rough one was just using one extra shade of purple.  A slightly brighter shade that got used as the main purple.  The original shades got used for the shadow and in-lining.

Another thing you could do is remove the black outlines and put darker tones of colour instead.

@ O Ilusionista: Yeah, thanks man! I do think that because I'm using the original NES sprites people see this MOD as an 8-bit MOD and I wanna make it more like a cartoon.

@ Beastie: Good to hear man! Thanks for taking the time to do this! I do wanna keep the black outlines since it makes the sprites looks more like a cartoon, which is what I'm going for. I have already change the direction of the light on Leonardo, Bebop and Rocksteady, they look better now.

@GaBoTiCo

How is the progress on your sprite editing?
And since you are changing the art direction of your game, maybe you should change the title of the topic.^^

I haven't had that much time but I should be able to work on it on my day off. I wanted to change the title of the topic but I do not know how and I didn't know what to change it to.

Update: I was thinking that perhaps "TMNT Classics" or  TMNT Old School" could be good names.

Modify your first post to change the title. ;)  But I don't think it matters, those other names aren't any less confusing.  And we've been following your thread for a while (there is too many TMNT titled threads already lol)

I agree you should keep black outline and just do the simple shadows like you were.

Lol!! Yo do have a point Beastie. I guees I"ll keep the "TMNT 8-bit" title and just add something at the end.

Alrighty then, following Beastie's advice I changed the direction of the light and this is what I have so far:
