New Marvel Beat em UP

REALLY getting their money's worth out of TMNT. I'm kind of hating this, because these studios are very, VERY quickly running beat em' ups into the ground as a genre. It's going to be a super niche laughing stock kind of thing again before we know it.

Spiderman, Storm, Wolverine and Captain America honest to goodness look like they just reduced the old Capcom sprites. Almost 1:1 down to the animation frame. Not a bad thing obviously, just interesting.
I don't mind this new "Retro Beat'em Up" fever, but I'm afraid they're not improving, just redoing the genre. As in, they're making these games like they still have the limitations from that era. Case in point, hundreds of similar enemies - if they just made at least, 2 or 3 versions of the same char...like, if they're similar soldiers, make them walk differently, f.e.

About "reusing" the CapCom sprites...I think they did some frankenspriting (or whatever it's called these days) and redrew most of them. But I could be wrong.

Have you guys seen this video about the new Marvel Beat em up?

Oh, the game has this horrible thing where the enemies bounce around the corners of the screen like beach balls, without the corners being anything solid.

God knows how much I hate that. And look at those weird physics, the characters float when they get hit.

And I get VERY worried about seeing someone from the FGC covering a beat 'em up. Because the last thing I want is to see the beat 'em up community turn into something that even remotely resembles the cancer that is the FGC.

And look at this: Wolverine fell into a hole in the helicarrier, which is flying very high... and instead of dying, he only loses a negligible fraction of his life.

I'm with you on all but two things:

I only watch him occasionally, but I have never known Max Dood to be disrespectful or anti-fun. Just the opposite from what I have seen of him. The FGC community at large may be a pain, but AFAIK he's not even close to a FGC person in scope of coverage or attitude.

I feel the way about pit deaths you do about phantom walls. I hate. HATE. LOATHE the lives system. There's nothing cool or heroic about having a short health-bar, dying in a blink and dropping from the top of a screen 3 times like you got kicked out of heaven. Give me a long health bar, ONE life, and some obstacles that punish but don't always delete you. Make the player tough and survivable - but if you screw up? That's it, back to the starting point for you.

Oh yes, he is much more respectful than the vast majority there. I even like to watch some of his content. What bothers me about him are two things:
- He hypes some things too much (and, with that, people do too).
- Because he is influential, sometimes companies (or the community) take his opinion too seriously, as if he were an authority, you know?

Phantom Walls (nice name btw) are a no good to me. I understand your point about the live system, but I dunno if I agree.

About the combos, this is a clear example of what I don't like (and I am not talking about the author here)

For us to go from that to people counting frames on every hit to complaining that something "is -3 and should be -2" is a short leap, as is for companies to start placing more value on this.

The recipe for disaster would be for the company to add a versus mode.

Totally agree. I think that this kind of thing ruined even the own VS Fighting games.
The "mind game" present in older titles like SFII or SF Alpha was completely lost. Now everything is about crazy combos, SF6 is a clear example.

Agreed buddy , Also everytime i play SF6 it make's me feel ill after about 4 ranked games strait and im a Diamond rank Ryu hahaha. I just try to play it like OG SF. It is fun sometimes but then you get the super sweaty combo has to be perfect no lifers that ruin the game for me.

I like that the intro looks like Jack Kirby's inking style from the Golden Age. It also looks close to the comicbook style.

I'm surprised to see Beta Ray Bill is chosen to join in.
Sentinels joined enemy ranks? hmmm.... makes me think if they were hunting for Wolverine and Storm or there would be more mutants.

Oh I hated it too!

Points I have about the game, although still in its early stages:

- I like that they threw a curveball using Phyla-Vell with the sword. Because if they did, people would just stick with the same old characters (although Marvel is the one who decides that, and they are known for stupid decisions). But you can expect names like Hulk for sure.

- I'm sure they'll waste some slot on some completely unnecessary urban character, like Daredevil.

- One of the game's sprites is an old sprite from the Mugen community (just like in the TMNT game)

- I like that it reminds me of the TMNT game, but I'm starting to see a certain pattern here, a level that smells like reskin.

- I confess that on one hand, I got excited about the game. On the other hand, it discouraged me from continuing to work on my AUBF project. In the case of the Power Rangers game, I have an incredible spriter on my side and I know I can fight on equal terms (many people have already said that our project is better than Rita's Rewind). But here... I don't have that impression.
This might mean much since I barley have any youtube subs but I'm looking forward to your new version of AUBF more than this game.

Beta Ray Bill/Silver Surfer Trailer:
An amazing choice!
Silver Surfer sprites were made by a very skilled Mugen spriter called Sean Altly

oh, really thanks for the nice words, buddy. Visually, I can't compete with this game. But maybe gameplay-wise... :)

Let's hope the story is serviceable.
While I wasn't blown away by Xmen '97, I appreciate it's existence and would start off the first mission where they defeat the sentinels in a similar fashion. Almost like in first mission in Xmen clone wars but beat em up style.
Then the whole Xmen vs The Avengers can start.

I never finished the show but with Magneto running things could always take a turn for the worse.
I liked how the world view them as freaks in Xmen 97.
I find it weird how they would have super heroes viewed as saviours and mutants thrown upon when both groups generally fall under the meta human category.

I see they've chosen Cosmic Ghost Rider, now all we need is Doctor Druid and Wonder man and the character roster is perfect.
