Hi, this is Shibuyah-kun--I don't know if anyone would remember me since I was always so quiet on Lavalit, but I did have a pixel-art thread there.
I've been a big fan of beat 'em ups, always wanting to make one of my own, and Open BoR seemed like a nice thing to play with--though, while I could probably make a game with pre-made resources, I'd like to make my own instead. :3
I was on the fence about how to tackle it, and still kinda am, but I got a head done for one of the characters for it.

It blends with the dark background a bit, but here it is. I've worked with more anime-inspired styles before(Tales of VS., Pokemon B/W overworld, Kimino Yuusha, and Final Fantasy), so I wasn't sure if I wanted to go for a more serious look like on the right, or a more animated/colorful eye-type like on the left.
I also had two hair colors in mind--see, originally, I wanted him to have white hair, but I wanted something a bit prettier to look at. Though...I couldn't decide between the silver blonde, or the pale brown.
...I probably should have done more before posting this, but I want as much input as I can get from people who work with this sort of stuff all the time. I'm more used to smaller sprite-styles, so advice would be nice. ^ ^;

The smaller eyes work better for an older (late teens early 20's?) male character. I'd leave the big eyes for a girl or a young male.

I work with small sprites almost exclusively. It can get tricky coming up with different moves at times, but since you're a sprite artist I doubt you'll have trouble.  :)

Welcome back Shibuyah! I was waiting for you :)

As for your image, I agree with the rest, right is best choice. Big eyes gives bad impression.
For color, I'm fine with both color set.
