[Solved] Selling games made with OpenBOR

O Ilusionista

Captain 100K
Can we sell games which are made using OpenBOR, which had been made using original stuff (not ripped from any comercial game)?

Aside from credits, which other things shoud we need to do? To pay to the original coders?

If so, there is a way to share some of the profit with the coders who made it possible (utunnels, plombo, DC and many others)?

Thanks.

i remember zamuel did a commercial game with openbor

it was some kind of a game that comes with a comic book i think
i dont remember much but it was a original content to advertise the comic book and the game was a bonus for those who buy the comic i think

This is a question that gets asked once or twice a year, and pretty much every year. I think we should put up a FAQ somewhere than people can read.  :)

Now I don't remember the details, but it's something like this: Some method of royalties--be it money or just credits--would have to be given to the authors of OpenBOR and the authors of the original BOR. Then there is something to be done with the GNU licensing the engine uses for what I believe to be sound and some drawing functions. Then, all of the concerned parties--the mod author, the OpenBOR authors, the BOR authors, and the publisher--would have to sit down and talk about the necessary red-tape required to put the game into the desired market.

I think the Android Play Store currently allows you to self-publish; and it certainly can't be too hard to get a game onto the Dreamcast or Ouya. Steam, Xbox Live Indie, PSN, and WiiWare/eShop may be different stories entirely.

Sorry, I haven't found anything about this on this forum, and I wasn't very active at Lavalit.

I plan to make a commercial game on a (maybe) near future, but I need to know all the details.

as long as the content is all original, it should not e a problem. Zamuel did it with his "Street Team" mod, first it was a thread talking about all the stuff, but finally the details of the agreement were never published and done behind doors so we don't know more about it.

I think it was about 2010 or 2011?

The GNU license allows commercial software as long as it remains opensource. That is : you can sell a game but are not allowed to try to prevent copying and modifying by someone else.

Oh, stop. No need to apologize, silly! I was just saying, people ask about making commercial OpenBOR games all the time; so much so that it would probably be best if we put the details of that in a FAQ somewhere.

Wasn't Street Team released as a secure pak?

I think you may need to get permission from the authors of OpenBOR and BOR. Every author I think. Maybe Roel, Jeroen, and probably those who were involved in developing BOR. Even for OpenBOR team like SX, Damon, and Plombo. I guess it has to be current and former staff of those. :P I can't remember.

Please correct me if I'm wrong on this. I post up on some I remember. I forgot some.

If your making a commercial game and all work (audio, gfx etc..) in that pak file is completely original. Then send a message to one of the admins and then the pak file can be encrypted into openBors spk file format and send it back to you and you can sell it as you wish (this has all ready been done). All you need todo with the openBor.exe is attach the license and your good to go.

I don't think you need to pay to the original authors I guess. You are going to sell your own original game if you have all original sounds, sprites, gfx, etc. Also, like what MatMan said about spk (secure pak), no one will unpak your file after one or some of the admins change that file.

and no taxes to pay? I mean, I don't need to pay to the original authors of BOR/OpenBOR?
maye not, but on that case, I'll pay some royalty to the official openbor site, chrono crash  ;)

No royalties are required to us, though the engine license does require itself to be included (which by extension credits the engine authors).

AFAIK, Plombo has removed the code remnants that tied us down to unknown authors, though I am always fuzzy about this. That leaves Roel and his team, whom thus far have never had any protest I know of.

Perhaps is not necessary, but I think a small percentage should be good, as it will help to pay server costs. although is up to the modder.

You would hope, if someone were making profit, after covering their own costs, they would consider donating to the project.
