Retiring from making openbor games.

Having recently discovered you can't use edited mugen characters without permission of the creator (despite the fact the sprites originally came from Capcom, SNK and other games) then to be honest I'm just going to have to give up making openbor games, or just continue making them as a private hobby, because I'm going to be completely limited as to the characters I can use and I don't want any more copyright strikes on youtube or anywhere else. If anyone wants to see my comic strips, here is a link to them, as I think I'll go back to making these. I'll still be recording playthroughs, although it will have to be with characters already in the openbor games.

I think you are overreacting but it’s your decision. But I want to point out that I have never heard of somebody getting copyright strike because of using an edited sprite, specially from Mugen.
Did you already coded a character in Openbor? We should start with that. There’s plenty of “evil Ryu” “evil wherever” characters whose sprites has been available for so long that I don’t think anyone would care anymore.

@oldyz,

Your post is removed. Encouraging others to solider on is commendable and welcome, but we do NOT condone disrespect toward other creators under any circumstances, be they Mugen, OpenBOR, Unity, or any of the corporate giants. Sure, I could comb through anyone's stuff, make minimal edits and call it mine or tell the other guy "just try and stop me", but that's not the kind of community we foster here.

Do that again and it's an infraction.

fair enough,
the spirit of the response was to take the stuff and build over it, transform it and make it more than before, use the stuff as a base or place holder....
just in my stubborness i wanted to be very thorough on the extremes how those things could go...
because even original work nowdays can be affected by bad faith individuals using trademark and other legal means..

on the other forum, what i referred to was that all of us in the fan games community are vulnerable to the whims of the giants and the IP owners, best thing you can do is create original stuff to avoid most troubles or use stuff that is (cant remember the term) opensource -ish like the lore stuff made for the SPC foundation.

To avoid mainstream censorship, be open to alternative and decentralized media.

Sorry, I've tried to use sprite editors and all I've been able to do is change the size of characters, alter their palettes and rotate sprites (I used new palettes and rotated sprites to make Ziza and Donna from Crime Busters into playable characters). Does anyone know if Felipe B Silva or any of the other people who've used edited characters in their openbor games have ever had any trouble from the creators?

Actually, now I come to think of it I've seen fan-made mugen characters in a lot of openbor games. Anyway, did anybody ask the permission of SNK, Capcom, Sega or Marvel before using their stuff?
