Opinion question?

Just wanted to know how you guys felt about a Openbor game being released in a episodic way like Life is Strange, The Walking Dead, Resident Evil Revelations 2?

No qualms here, I support this episodic endeavor as long as they're free which they will be so I support it lol

Oh yeah, totally free of course. I was thinking I could go for a episodic release to keep things fresh and updated. Normally in this community, we wait months for a demo, then we get a small playable demo, and then we have to wait some more months/years until the final product is complete... and then that's it. It's over.  :-\

Trust me, there's nothing wrong with that, but the wait can be painful if you're impatient.

I was thinking we could just replace the .pak file with every update.

Awesome, I didn't know your game was episodic. That's what I get for dipping in and out of the scene.

How do you release yours? Do you just update the pack? Is it monthly or not on schedule at all?

I though you're asking about opinion on games with different series (different paks) but instead you're asking about games with updated series (single pak)

If that's the question then the answer is obvious, I prefer have it all in single pak
Though I won't release an update if it's only one level added compared to the previous version. I prefer to release an update with something significant to show

Well, most of us start mod with big and long story making it require long time to complete the mod, save the balancing and debugging time. That's why  :'(

This kinda reminds me of the 3 Splatterhouse mods, which were all one big story. I'm glad they were made though, I never planned on playing the original games, though I own and beat the latest one for the 360(Where you can unlock the original games).

Anyways, I don't mind a mod being episodic. It kinda feels like what I'm doing with Sonic Revolution, I didn't make that mod with one story, but each stage having it's own story. Up till a certain point, each release should be a finished version and just keeps going depending on how much I put in after that point, or finding others who wanted to make their own stages.

I'm sorry guys, let me clarify some things a bit. I wasn't gonna update the pack per level. I don't want to release 1 level, wait, and then release 1 more level. To me, that's just not cool.

I personally want to release episodes by chapters. I would like each chapter to have about 5 to 7 complete levels and mini games, along with a progressing story and new moves.

And then... when Episode 2 comes, it will bring the 2nd chapter with 5 to 7 more levels and mini games, and the story will continue with some more move upgrades to go along with your previous stuff from the past levels.

And even if I finish telling the main story, I can add flashback stories and side quest to keep the game fresh.

Each Episode I release will feel like a "mini mod" in it's own right.

If you want to make it episodic, it's not a problem, as long as you have commitment to it. That means, it has a definite constant release date. Making something episodic is a bit like making a webcomic. You assure the crowd that you release pages every Wednesday and Friday and they expect it so.

For this to work though, you should have like a plan laid out, some sort of 'road map'. Even if you don't follow it as is, as long as you stick a release date in each episode, you can follow that.

I think it all depends on the type of game.. If there is no type of level up system and its a normal beatem up then i think it can work great.  However if it is a huge game like bloods dungeons and dragons i wouldn't suggest it because of the complex nature of that game.
