Online play idea

My idea to add online play is to advertise for a programmer who can add online play to openbor who would be paid from funds raised by donations from me and other members from this community who want to see this feature added.

If anyone supports me on this please post here to let me know.  I you think this is a bad idea and wont work please tell me why.

i think its a lot more complicated than that though they have been trying to do that with mugen for years.. You need dedicated servers that will allow you to do that as well as the programming you are mentioning.  But its a good idea.

well I was thinking rather then server based games someone can host and give out ip for anyone to connect I used to play yugioh online like this and its a feature even zsnes emulator has.

I have posted on a website with this project yesterday and I already have 3 6 reply's from coders adv they can do the job in just a few days they are charging between £130-£315 for the job.  I have only posted there to get a idea of the price and feedback if any coders can do the job.

I think I need to speak to one of the openbor developers to get the updated source code I was hoping to hear DC's thoughts on this idea guess all I can do now is wait.

If I get the go ahead I will be setting up a donations link to my paypal reading up now on all the in's and out's of it.

DC explained once that the engine isn't optimized for online play... Something about the way it just loads everything into memory, I believe. It supposedly wouldn't work well if it has to communicate with a client, but I don't remember the specific reasons.

That said, as a modder who consistently designs for multiplayer, I'd happily support online play. But I must ask: did you even find a dev? Will they look through the source code and name a price? Do they have experience in internet networking for game development? These are things you have to keep in mind.

i think create from strach a online mutiplayer envorivment will be much hard, and even more because openbor is  a multiplatform program so

the coder will need use the WINSOCK api for windows code, SOCK for linux and i dont know what to use for other ports, i remember in my past university days when i had co create a chat room in C, that was a pain and i remember how many hours i spended to make an ugly hello world phrase swith from one computer to another eheheheh

maybe usinga middleware like kailera or ggpo thing could make things less hard but i bet dont will be an easy task with maybe not satisfatory results with some real lag inputs

Hate to guys, but I'm afraid that I am going to have to nix this one for the time being.

I've gone into painstaking detail more times than I can count over why online play isn't available and I'm not of the mind to do it again. Suffice to say that first, no, there are NOT coders who can do it in a "few days". No matter how good a coder is, the sheer volume of work to be done is simply beyond a quick fix. Anyone who says otherwise is lying or has no clue what they're getting into.

Second, we aren't going hire anyone for engine dev work. There are so many pitfalls in doing that I could never count them all. If fresh blood wants to join the team freely and contribute I'm all for it. But if I find that coders are being compensated, I'll simply have to close the source off and limit who can touch it - a step I'd rather not take. Please do not continue this for now.
