I even found some unused sprites while poking around in the back too, I'll certainly turn these sprites into fully functioning attacks.

You could edit the barrel and have that dude hide in it then pop up with a knife swipe.

Just like sf89, I should have used Final Fight 89 instead.
 
If I released something publicly probably yeah, before I released a demo I wanted to change the name so people know it as THAT game, decided on the alternate universe so I can change the appearance of the Playable characters too.

St89 is a dope name!
Especially when you look into the history of it and why it was later on changed to final fight.
I love the artwork of the manual.
I chose the Alpha series for my game just to add the final fight cast to it but later on learned of that the guy who worked on STF went on to make Fatal Fury.

I have mixed feelings about it, on one hand they are actually making a Night Slashers remake of the arcade but better



on the other hand with everything that's available it should look, feel and play better but at what point with all that's available does it make it NOT Night Slashers?

BonusJZ's version is like an updated version of the arcade, better animations, better gameplay, weapons etc so it's not a remake because things that have been added fundamentally change how the game is played and perceived like a combo system


That's why I opted for an alternate universe kind of vibe while at the same time paying homage to the original and BonusJZ's version so I have remnants of both to the point where it's familiar but to call it Night Slashers just didn't seem right, there is absolute zero in terms of gameplay that acts like the Arcade and all the things people like about BonusJZ's version like a combo system I removed, to me the combo stuff is pointless especially the highest combo being like 6 or 7 hits and that's mostly the attack chain,

I decided to remove weapons also because they felt cheap and shit to be honest and now with me repainting the sprites and making changes in the appearance of the characters I felt it's not really Night Slashers/X anymore.

I did something similar a few years ago called The Last Fight which was final fight set in an alternate universe and I changed the story a little like Mike Haggar being Mikey Haggar a police commissioner of Irish/scottish descent and I made him ginger haired etc


I saw @machok was making his take on an expanded Final Fight game and decided to drop mine as it was in the early stages of development anyway.

So yeah Night Stalkers is born, same take on things but a different universe and it is it's own game, I think I've earned that right considering how much I've worked on it.

Well! That's complicated. When you started your wonderful project, it really looked like a revamped Night Slasher (with new features and moves).
Back then I would have called that module "Night Slashers Deluxe".

But now that your goal is to change the characters and the story, I don't see the point of keeping the the words "Night Slashers" in the title. Unless, like @machok stated, you to point out that this module is based on the original Night Slashers.

Could you possibly describe in a few sentences the new characters (personality, visuals) and the Story? Maybe we -the Community- ccould devise a cool name for the module? :)

Yeah it was, at first I kinda wanted to finish what BonusJZ started hence Night Slashers XD but the more I looked under the hood the more broken it was so I spent a good year fixing all the bugs and replacing most of the code so it ran better, I completely revamped the grapple system added more characters and weapons and was gonna call it a day but there were things I didn't like about it also so I removed the things I didn't like and that removal of things was kinda the catalyst for change.

As a developer things can get out of hand and ultimately change completely during developmenting, for example machoks Fight Fight
was supposed to just be an expanded version of the classic arcade with the original title of Street Fighter 89 but as machoks skills developed so did his vision of the game at some point we have to stop though or else it becomes something else, If he put sandman from spiderman as a playable character would it really be Final Fight anymore? (you be surprised but a lot of members have left due to how others treat the games they created and spent years making) a simple thing like that can shift a games direction totally.

Also another great thing about a name change is what the name is associated with. There's a lot of trash out there associated with Night Slashers a LOT, Night Stalkers however although is related it's more like it's more attractive cousin.

I lived in this exact situation during the SOR2X / SORX transition. The learning curve and all the OpenBOR discoveries I made during the old SOR2X development amazed me too much to the point I was committing many excesses trying to put into practice everything I learned at once, like if there's no tomorrow.

The best thing I did was to do a full stop, re-plan the project and restart with a new name, also meaning a new phase in my "developer's life".

Mike Ginger's slams are on point!
I'd like to see those moves in '89 if possible.
The Last Fight look different enough to be it's own thing but time is an issue.
Since you removing weapons, how will this game play like?
The original Night Slashers was buggy but I finish it and funny enough the Openbor version play better.
Since Night Stalkers is it's own thing checkout D'nD tower of Doom. That game is paced rather well.
It had alot going for it. Use fire to kill trolls and so on.

I apologise for the misunderstanding, I removed how BonusJZ did weapons, now weapons are integrated into combat instead of item pick ups. when I was re-painting the game I noticed things that were obvious before but I had a kinda sprite blindness I guess, like the American flag on Jake's back which I recoloured to make stand out more and give the sprites more colour depth.

And then I was like.... he's got GUNS in his freakin ARMS!!! what's the point in him picking up guns when he has them already built into his arms? he's got guns for guns. So creativity got the better of me, can he shoot lasers? what about heat seeking rockets etc so I decided to make weapons personal to each character and develop the lore of the new universe.

Re-colouring the sprites which I put on the back burner until the game was fully stable has allowed me to be more creative,

How weapons will work now will be based on holding the attack, the longer attack is held down the stronger/ different the weapon, pick up weapons will be more stage related.

Looking great so far.

Too bad we'll never see Rou (as in "row", not "roo"/"rew" LOL) from Denjin Makai 2 in it. But I believe he would be recolored if he were to be used and had a different name.

Rou will be there and another Denjin Makai character, Re-painted, 6 playable characters overall, I removed Ana Bolic, as fun as she was she just didn't fit like I wanted her to. I'll reveal more about the other 3 Night Stalkers when I have more to show. I wanted to concentrate and redo the first 3 base characters first, Jack formally Jake, Tojo formally Chris and Ying Yue formally Hong Hua.

This look amazing.
I have one suggestion though,checkout the games of old that does rrange combat and enemy placing rather well like Cadillacs and dinosaurs,denjin mmakai 2 and armored warriors.
That intro to the video new gore looks crazy!
When it come to Night Slashers in general
I'd like for it to play like DnD shadow of Mystria!
I can see it no...same game design but horror monster theme.
Looking forward to seeing your take on it.
 
It would be cool if explosive attacks could gib enemies into small pieces similar to various FPS games. Will players also have gore animations, too?

Really give these sprites a fresh feeling!

Would you get rid of the black pixel mustache under the nose ?
It kinds of reminds me of a certain "historic" guy ^^;

It may have been said before... Sorry I could not read every text ^^
