New OpenBOR player, and just had some questions about getting started

Hey, I’ve been checking out OpenBOR and trying to get it up and running and figure out how it works. I just have some questions.

I’ve downloaded some of the game pak’s from here and see that they come with their own exe file and config files and stuff in the folder.
I already downloaded the latest OpenBOR 4.0 app from the GitHub page, so I was assuming that would be current the version to use. But when I copied some of the game pak files that I got from here into the pak folder of OB 4.0, some wouldn’t run and then some had issues with sound and stuff. I tried Jennifer and it wouldn’t run at all, and TMNT - Rescue Palooza has sound issues when you get to the boss at the end of the sewer level.
But if I run both games with the OB exe files that are included in the game folders, the games will work ok.

So is it better to just run certain games with the included OB exe engine if it happens to be included in the folder? What’s the best way to manage your games and pak’s? I’m used to the other emulators where you can throw all your games into it, open it up, select the game and press play.

And my other question is about finding games that aren’t available here to download. Where is a reliable place to find some older games, like Halloween - The Wrath of Michael Myers, Crisis Evil, Evil Dead Redux, and so on.
I’ve found some on internet archive, but don’t know if they’re working or the latest versions or not.
And then I’d assume to just try them and see if they’ll work in OB 4.0 as they just come as single pak files.

I’ve found a version of Streets of Rage Zombies that’s around 80mb in size and then another one (Streets_of_Zombie_[+Corrupted_Cops+Craniac+Pop+Russia+Vata][18+][v.3.0_Build_4153]) that’s almost 600mb in size, that can’t be right? So I’m a bit confused about the whole OpenBOR thing at the moment and also the best and most reliable place to find older game pak’s.

Can anyone help me out?

Thanks

You just answered your own question. :)

First things first. Get it out of your head that OpenBOR is anything resembling an emulator or a console. It's nothing of the sort. At all. No. Not. Still no.

OpenBOR is a game engine. IOW, it's the same thing as Unity or Unreal. You wouldn't unpack anything made on one of those and try to run them on another version would you? Don't do it in OpenBOR.

Yes, the engine does happen to have a built in library menu where you can select one of several games in the same folder, but this was tacked on as a convenience years ago before the engine advanced to become what it is. The current development staff has since agreed it was a stupid thing to do precisely because of confusion like yours. Ignore it. Make a space for each game download, fire it up and play. The end.

And my other question is about finding games that aren’t available here to download. Where is a reliable place to find some older games, like Halloween - The Wrath of Michael Myers, Crisis Evil, Evil Dead Redux, and so on.

This is THE source for moudles, full stop. If it isn't here, chances are wherever it is will be loaded to the gills with bloat or hidden adware. Best thing to do is post about specfic games you are looking for, and there's a good chance the creators are still around in the community. Barring that, we can likely find an old copy no one has uploaded yet and make sure it's clean.

Thanks for the info, I understand the game engine Vs emulator thing now and how to use OpenBOR.

I’ve managed to download most of the game modules from here that I was looking for. But I’m still missing some older ones that aren’t here.
These are the ones I need…

Halloween - The Wrath of Michael Myers
Evil Dead Redux
Bruce Lee - Revenge of the Dragon
Kill Bill
Cobra Kai
Crisis Evil series
Simpsons - Treehouse Of Horror
Streets of Rage Zombies
Sorority Camp Slashers

Are any of these available? I’ve found some versions online, but like I said before I’m not sure if they’re safe to dl or even the most current versions of them.

Thanks

@stoksyxl

some of those modules are from an author that distributes his work on his own site, they are protected and most of the time self contained .exes, if you find a pak version of them, its either an older version, or some unofficial extract that could potentially have weird code injected
