I went to a special screening of Cry Macho the New Clint Eastwood film and it was pretty good but what has happened to America films in general? I have Netflix and Hulu but most of the movies are terrible. Unless things are some real "gems" getting passed me I have seen much better films coming out of Europe and other parts of the world. Not that I don't expect that but with the American movies here lately It's either low budget and boring or just boring. Bruce Willis filmography is packed over the last few years with movies that could be what we called when I was growing up "made for TV" movie. Nothing I would ever want to see twice or even think sequel. Who are writing these scripts here lately? In half the cases it's like they are trying to make a political statement and if that's so....again back to boring! People go to the theater to get away from that sorta thing. We have already the lowest award show viewership of my lifetime with the MTV awards being the typical dismal ratings. In the 80's and 90's the awards show were fun to watch and you enjoyed them. Somewhere along the way they have become "agenda driven" performances by mediocre stars dressed in bizarre choices of garb in attempt to make a statement no one else cares about. And are usually accepting awards for crap while giving a speech about things most people are trying to forget about. (hence the term celebration). That is why no one cares about them anymore. The audience feels alienated where they used to be made feel warm and welcome. On top of that, the product is bad, the presentations are bad and the "celebrations" are...well bad..oh and boring. Sure some films should tell real lfe and sometimes tragic stories but usually there is some kind of redemption if just in the human spirit. Maybe just simple hope. But art and entertainment are supposed to be the big escape from all the pain. What's worse is they keep continuing to do it as the ratings for most awards shows are in decline more every year. Come to think of it it's not just the movies but the rock n roll music isn't good either unless the group has been around 30 years. The American film industry used to put out good films at least 5 really great films every year that I can remember. Films that I would actually get out and pay to see including buying very over priced Popcorn, sodas, and other snacks. Some particular years I'd say there were even more than twice that average. But American pop culture has gotten dry I would really hate to say I paid any more than just a flat monthly streaming service rate to most of what I have seen lately. Many were made long before I heard the term Covid. I welcome cool-ness shade wearing by the pool bombastic personalities but people have to earn it first to truly be a star. Very few new faces in American Hollywood are really earning the celebrity status in modern times... Even though my nostalgia to experience that classic tradition I grew up loving and that made me love great films. I still yearn for that experience of buying my ticket, standing in line for some fresh yet so overpriced treats at the snack bar then finally heading for my seat to relax in a dark theater for a great show is still very much alive -My "screen industry rant"
