Captain America and the Avengers was always one of my favorite arcade games growing up, I always played it when I went to the movie theater! There is no use in making an Avengers game because O Ilusionista and Doom have an amazing mod. I am not going to try and pretend for a minute that this mod is not copying the Avengers, but I thought a game with DC characters might be fun!
I have already asked O Ilusionista for permission to use his game for influence, but I will try to make things unique. Here are the characters I have sprites for right now.

and the select screen idea (I will make them better once the characters are finished)

So far Green Arrow is the only character coded and is only 50% or so done. Since the characters come from the Justice League fighter game on Genesis they don't have any actual walk/run animations. If anyone is interested in helping with characters I would really appreciate it since I do not have much skill with sprite editing. Here is a quick video showing a little bit of what I have right now.

Everything is a WIP like the HUD and will change in the future when I get better ideas and/or people to help.

Any input or help is welcome. Thanks to all the awesome game designers for all your hard work and inspiration!

hey, I like it! the comic book look is a nice idea. And the sparks are very nice too.
I plan to make a DC (or a DC/Marvel crossover) game using that sprites on a future, but not for now, I am too busy.
I could try to help you with something...who knows? :)

Good luck!

Nice work, some palette changes might be cool thou, make everything bolder/brighter, extra contrast, so it looks more inked.

Thank you for the feedback everyone! What do you think of something like this for the intro when the game starts up, having one for each character with a Biography and other info like first comic appearance?

I will probably have a page turning animation between each character. Kind of like in the game Comix Zone (Also one of my all time favorite games)

Looks good, nice font.  :)

Are you going to add something like breaking the page line like in comix zone?

bWWd had this in his battletoads mod if you need an example.

oh, that is a nice idea!

Shaybe, can I give you a suggestion? Pay attention to the blend of styles. All chars and enemies must blend well toghter (stages have a bit more freedom). Judging from the first video, we can see that the enemie has one style (strong colors with black outline), while the char have another (smoother colors with no black).

Take a look at Zvitor's Marvel Alliance and mine/doom Avengers game. Each one have all the chars to blend well togheter. Zvitor uses a technique where he reclors all the chars using the same style (this is how he can use SNES sprites with Genesis Street of Rage sprites). on our case, we use the same color style for all chars (4 colors at max) + a black border + size adaptions. I know there are many mods that simple throw all the chars togheter, but the result is kinda indigest for me. Even in Mugen I don't like to to such kind of mix.

Size is another thing to care about (look at the preview image)
Justice League openBOR Test
Look at the soldier size, now look at Green Arrow size. If Green Arrow was standing still, he would be way taller than the soldier. And Green Arrow is not big (5'11") http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/Oliver_Queen_(New_Earth)
You will need to find bigger enemies.

Sure, this is my opinion only and you don't need to follow it, its just an advice.

Thank you for the input, that is why I posted things on here. I was planning to add the breakable dividers, I will have to check out that mod!
I actually do the same black outline on all the characters and enemies, but you are right, because of the style it doesn't look the same. I will have to figure out how to recolor my characters without the quality suffering too much. When I tried to reduce the amount of colors before the characters just did not look as good.
Maybe I have to actually edit each sprite rather than just try to change the palette, but like I said before I am not very good with sprite editing.
I will take into consideration all the input and see what I can do!

O - Can you explain what you meant about the 4 colors max for characters? I opened up hawkeye and looked at his palette and there were 12 colors + black and white

Oh! I'm a little slow sometimes. I thought you meant 4 colors total plus black and white! hahaha.
So for green arrow I should only have 4 shades of green max plus the other colors

you don't need to be THAT exact. If a player has 3 or 5 tones, that is ok. Just avoid to use chars with 8, 9 tones, because this will be noticable. You can adjust it directly on the sprites or with a palette.

I noticed you are using Genesis sprites, right? They are ok. To use SNES ones, you will need to change the colors to match (Genesis games always have stronger colors)

Tried some color changes with the character. Anyone have some input for which style, or maybe a better idea for how to do the character?

#1 - Character from the video. Resized to 60%, then indexed image colors.
#2 - Resized 60%, then indexed with a little less colors
#3 - Indexed colors, then rezied 60%
#4 - Indexed with less colors, then resized 60%

I decided that 55% resize puts the characters at a size like the original Avengers Arcade game.

left - Resized then indexed to 16 colors
right - indexed to 16 colors then resized

Why don't you leave the chars at their original size?
The resize works fine but is very trick to do. On animations, you will notice some problems.

Little update. Spent some time last week working on characters. Red Tornado is just the one sprite and Steel needs adjusted more to fit the style of everything else.

I'm pretty busy between having a newborn and work (Navy). In a month I will be deploying for about 7 months. I will have my laptop to work on stuff but no internet access (Except for work computers that I will not be able to upload stuff to). So hopefully I will have a demo when I come back.
