Interested Developer's Questions!

Hi, thanks for keeping OpenBOR alive! I have just discovered this and I'm interested in making a game. I have these questions:

1. Can you make looping animated cutscenes?
2. Can you use original graphics? If yes, are there limitations to color depth, size, etc - also what about high res...
3. Can you make save files and 'level up' features? (Also equipment, stat modifiers, etc...)

Just that for now, thanks!

Hi there! :)

If you want infinite loop, then the answer is no. But you can repeat an animated scene couple times to give impression of looping

But of course, OpenBoR doesn't care if your images are ripped or handdrawn. As long they in indexed color mode and in supported file types, they are accepted
As for resolution, you can set higher resolution if you want
Here's an example of mod using original graphics and in 640x480 resolution:

Yes for both. It's just matter of defining what level up is

Thanks for the swift answers!

Can I play it like 9999 times over and cut the scene when a button is pressed to skip the scene? Reason is these loops play a large role in the game... Imagine it like this... When you complete the game, the reward is "candy", now as a prize, you get to view a looped animation of "licking the candy" and stay there until you decide to swallow it to end the scene, to which the swallowing animation would occur leading to the game over screen or maybe go back to a selection menu...

That's impressive! The game looks fun as well!

As the player scores 'experience' points a meter gradually fills up and the player raises a level everytime a certain amount is reached. Gaining levels would mean that the heroes stats are increased and new abilities are unlocked. Maybe set some variables to trigger certain story events as well...

Hmmm.... the best way I know to implement that is by using entity to play the animated gif. With little script, the animation (not necessarily using gif) will be repeated until a key is pressed

That's doable :)
