How to change the number of starting credits of Final Fight LNS

So I ran into this problem where even when I activate cheats of infinite credits via inumerous ways (ingame, cheat engine, etc) I still ger a game over and can't continue my playthrough.
The LNS games are brutal, but very fun, and I want to play changing characters. The other cheat codes works fine, but makes the game too easy with infinite lives/health.
Some help here, plz!
