Help urgently needed: controller issues

Hi guys. I'm currently in crisis mode.

As you may know, I've been working on my game. Today, after several years I finished programming the game. And now I'm learning that I might have to axe the multiplayer option (and maybe more?). The issue is controller support.

During development I almost exclusively used the same controller to move all characters, and so I wasn't aware of the gravity of the situation.

I'm using OpenBoR v3.0 Build 6391, Compile Date: Apr 8 2020.

Upgrading to OpenBOR 4 is not feasible, I just tested and the game is extremely glitchy and unplayable. It would require extensive fixes, and with an announced release date of July 22, that's not realistic.

Pressing start on one controller activates two different players, walking left or right takes snapshots, depending on the configuration it might not even make the character move at all.

Issues seem exacerbated when using a bluetooth Xbox controller. For example, pressing A in the menu (which had been assigned to "jump" when configuring the controller) suddenly means "back" (as if I had selected the option "back" in the menu which would take me to the previous screen, even though that option wasn't even highlighted), etc etc

I found this guide by @oldyz that sadly confirms that the issue is not on my end, so it seems there's nothing I can do.

I can't see myself instructing Steam customers to go through these hoops to be able to play with friends, to understand that player 3 will become player 1, that Xbox Bluetooth controllers (to my understanding, the single most popular controller used by the steam players, as terrible as that gamepad is IMHO) may not be usable...

Can someone more knowledgeable than me PLEASE tell me if there's a way to deal with this?

Is there another build (after 6391 but before v4) that doesn't have this issue? (I also tried with build 7142 and the issues are a bit less extreme but still present)

Seriously considering a last-minute change and making the game single player only, despite what I've been advertising for a long time...
