lol... funny you bring that up O_Ilusionista. I have considered off and on bringing in the Centurion as playable character. His magic would be (big shocker) transformation.

  • Level 1: "Power UP!" Ripped shirt
  • Level 2: "Power UP!" Roid freak
  • Level 3: "Rraaaaaaahhhhh!" Beast transformation

I go back and forth about it though, because I'd either have to leave out a ton of moves compared to the others or do a massive amount of sprite work. As a second part of that, assuming I did bring him in, to decide if the transformation is always the wolf, mimics the original game where each stage has a preset beast, or use additional levels of magic for different beasts, like this:

  • Level 1: Ripped shirt
  • Level 2: Roid freak
  • Level 3: Wolf
  • Level 4: Tiger
  • Level 5: Bear
  • Level 6: Dragon

It's a no brainier until you remember that Sega only animated the wolf transformation. The others are just done with flashing, and more than once I've made clear my mental block about using flash frames to fake anything.

That is so wrong lol

Just a minor test, making sure there's no glitches in Longmoan's color separation.

sorry for oot here, why openbor go to HoF very fast if character die and player didn't press start immediately to continue?

This is looking fantastic man, cant wait to see how it improves more and more.

"My endgame plan is to cover all the mainline Golden Axe games"

When you said this, you were talking about characters only? or stages too?

Thank you pepodmc. I was referring mostly to characters. Stages will use a layout like Golden Axe 2 (arcade), where you can choose your path in certain areas, but they'll both lead back to one place.

The actual stages encompass all the arcade, with a second half after that is partially based on Genesis  GA2 stages with a blend of arcade GA2.

Some of the branch paths are custom ideas of my own. An example would be Dragon's Throat. You can march through it like in GA2, or you can choose to go up and over the mountain which will feature heavy ice and snow instead. Another is the Fiends Path. You could try breaking straight through the enemy lines, which will consist of a high speed running stage.

Reworking the select screen a bit. As most are aware, the native select screen in OpenBOR is intentionally spartan due to Dreamcast optimization and the legacy of backward compatibility. You get one static background and that's it.

Usually the workaround is to build a whole new select system using level jumps, but I wanted to see what I could do with the native one, and this is the result so far. Everything you see is its own layer so I can dress it up programmatically. I need to add a crystal around the characters and insert a better font for their names. I'll also add some text animation and a few other touches to spruce it up. Just FYI though, yes I do know about the blood dripping "Select Player" in Japanese version, and no I won't be adding that.

Fantastic!! It seems like a 3D background

Very good flame effect :). So it will be a 3 players version? The middle character should be on the skeleton head maybye or in another hand :) .

MOAR 3D! Worked on my scripts a little more and did some Photoshop work to break up the background into separate layers.

Cool work adding even more 3D! Are there any plans to add back the rotating characters on the select screen? Maybe give the skeleton more depth by separating the hands from the body?
