Gamepad controller wont work with openbor game HELP PLEASE

Hello, first post and thus VERY NEW to all of this. Hopefully someone can help me with a problem I have.

Just discovered Mugen and Openbor accidently when my 7 year old asked me about certain characters and games they were in. Found GI JOE ATTACK ON COBRA ISLAND, which was something he really wanted to play /have. So I downloaded it and could not get the game pad to work !

Bought a newer one and same thing could not get it to work either !

The Gamepad controller works on Mugen games no problem but with this GI JOE ATTACK ON COBRA ISLAND I cant get it to work

I go to controls in the game options screen and it says gamepad enabled and then underneath it , it says player 1-4 . Player still reads the keyboard and the rest seems like it says controller.

In any case, I cant get the gamepad controller to work and my boy is dissapointed

Any help greatly appreciated

tried this on 2 pcs one a Windows vista and the other on whatever the most recent windows version is called

If the gamepad isn't detected by OpenBOR then use a program like xpadder or joy2key to bind your controller to the keyboard. I personally use xpadder for some of my older controllers.

So xpadder is a pay for product then ?
Not for sure I want to pay for something that may not fix my problem

okay got the Xpadder installed and got everything to work THANK YOU, Really appreciate the help

one more question. How can I do multiple controllers for say a 2-3 player game ?

everytime I plug in the other controller I get nothing
