Future projects

Yeah, I love Golden Axe and have many ideas in mind, mainly for the fighting mechanic.
But I would like to make something different, this franchise already received some recent projects, like the one by ZVitor and the Kimono's template.

To be honest I'm more inclined in making a 2d platformer. I was thinking about Sonic but this franchise already has a lot of amazing fan games done and others in-progress. I'm curious about exploring the pure 2d in OpenBOR instead of the "2.5d" used traditionally by beat 'em ups.
I can suggest a few games that could use a refresh:

1) The Anger of Stick series (all except Anger of Stick 5)

Because of the firearms, the game is becoming more of a shoot 'em up than a 2D fighting game.
I'd like to remove all firearms from the game entirely so that it really feels like a normal game

2) Final Kombat 2 (J2ME platform)

It wouldn't hurt to add a little variety, such as a greater number of characters,
a wider variety of levels, and levels without the goal of defusing bombs.

That would be cool for sure - the 2D part, not the Sonic one.
As you mentioned, Sonic has already many fan games and, since there's a huge fanbase, you also get a ridiculously toxic fanbase as a bonus. I know we shouldn't judge things based on the fanbase, but it's always something to consider.

Two names that come to mind—and might fit what you're looking for (even though they aren't exactly platformers)—are *Altered Beast* and *Comix Zone*; the latter would actually suit your style well in terms of gameplay.

However, one thing to keep in mind is that Sega has been acting a bit weird regarding fan games based on their IPs—just look at the case of Zvitor's *Golden Axe*.

Hokuto no Ken otherwise, presents platforms in a rather simplistic way.
This is not a bad idea, thanks for the suggestion.

I liked the Tekken Mobile art style, I will look for more information about it. Thanks!
And I'm also considering the 8-bit SoR you suggested.

Yeah, this is very true. I was thinking about the Master System games, mainly Sonic 1 and 2, avoiding the Mega Drive titles.

*Altered Beast* and *Comix Zone*
These are great suggestions, especially the Comix Zone.

I suspect that sooner or later, Sega may go after the SoR fan games again. I only wants that I have enough time to finish at least the planned SORX content.

Maybe Metal Slug, then? There aren't many fan projects out there for it. The only one that comes to mind is this one: Metal Slug SB Fanthology by SuperBlinky

Or perhaps something featuring the X-Men? Yeah, I know, ZVitor already has a lot of stuff involving them. But imagine a project built using all the great elements of SoRX—I mean the scripts, and so on... You know what I mean. :) Now picture Wolverine unleashing frenetic combos and slashing or tossing enemies away... Cyclops blowing up machines and smashing through walls with his optic blasts... Just like in X-Men 2: Clone Wars. In fact, Clone Wars could serve as the starting point.

Footnote: I find the explosion sprites in Sega Genesis games really charming, especially with that satisfying sound effect...

I like Clone Wars, it's really a good idea :)

Having recently played Final Fight 3, I was wondering if there was a high probability
that you would undertake a remake (specifically only FF 3) that would improve
the gameplay, difficulty (and perhaps characters like Cody from the first FF would
appear there as either a secret or simply an unlockable character, etc.)

I don't discard the idea, but the Final Fight franchise already received many new projects during the last years.
However, maybe a simple port just to improve the gameplay and a few other things, can be a possibility.

I don't know who this will interest aside from myself, but I like the idea of a reboot/retelling of SoR1 where it takes a slight Double Dragon 2 NES approach, or maybe a soft Real Bout approach like it did with the original Fatal Fury (though, of course, not nearly as drastic as I'd keep closer to the main concept, characters and plot) where it plays more like SoR2/SoR3, including having scenes, but still having the cop call option.

I'm also not against some sort of Street Fighter or Final Fight thing. I don't know what we'll do with it, but I almost want to go back to those sprites I based off of the animated movie, and use those as a Street Fighter beat em' up. Not to base it off of the movie, or at least not to be a direct adaptation, but it would be interesting to see such a thing used.

I always got depressed about how many Final Fight, Double Dragon and Streets of Rage games are out there but other very popular games don't get much love.
I feel the same thing, this is why I want to avoid franchises other people already are working on.
That said, I did a quick search and saw some new Altered Beast games. There's a PS2 reimagination and a new fan game.

Yeah, I always wanted a Street Fighter themed beat 'em up, but using the SF Alpha sprites and without mixing other franchises.

Hiryu no Ken (Flying Dragon) would be a good one. You can have Beat Em Up and/or Platformer elements, as well as the fighting system. You're in either a Beat Em Up or Platformer mode when you face several enemies, but when you face a boss, you'd have a 1-on-1 battle in either Street Fighter style or something. It doesn't have to be too exactly like Street Fighter for the complex systems, but it's up to you.

Virtua Fighter can be set in either 2D or 3D Beat Em Up, but it would probably be a VS fighter, though you're allowed to walk around in Z axis. You're free to press punch, kick, jump and block buttons. It's like Mortal Kombat where you're required to hold/press the block button to block opponents' attacks. I remember thinking "Virtua" came from "virtual" and made me think of a First-person view fighter, kinda like Punch-Out, but in 3D.

Star Fox can be set in either horizontal or vertical orientation as a 2D version of Shmup, but I don't know. A 3rd person view shooter, based on the Shmup, would be okay but I know it doesn't have to be exactly 3D with polygons. 2D sprites close to the polygons would be ok.

A Cliffhanger remake (based on the movie) is on my mind for it to be more challenging than the original. You could combine the elements from all versions of consoles (SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, etc.) into one for a true theme of its depth. It's where Gabe faces a lot of dangerous challenges on his journey before facing Eric (the last boss) in a "fight to the death" battle where you have an ultimate choice whether you survive or die in the battle. Mountain climbing, yes, but what about some dangerous adventures very thrilling and challenging on the character's journey? What do you think?

The Real Ghost Busters, you give it a feel of holding or tapping repeatedly on a button to drag a ghost into a ghost trap. I heard the gameplay for it isn't really good, but maybe a good gameplay is more than welcome for a better remake.

I agree with this. Hiryu no Ken S is one of those games that looks really amazing in screenshots - then you see it in motion and it's amazingly atrocious. The Shaghai Kid (Hokuha Syourin Hiryū no Ken outside the US) was better animated back in 1985.

Fixing the horrible animation and actually giving it some decent mechanics would be a cool touch. Though I still think Darkstalkers is the way.

It would be epic with an upgrade of graphics...
And I like the theme... Not so "common" on our community.

I still have much hopes for a Violent storm remake in Openbor.
I'm kind of obsessed with this game getting in this engine for some reasons ^^

In addition to Violent Storm, there are many other arcade games that need to be fully ported to OpenBOR

For example:

The COMBATRIBES, Vendetta (The Crime Fighters 2), Legionnaire,
Undercover Cops (though I don’t really like its graphic style),
Karate Blazers, Shadow Force, P.O.W.: Prisoners of War, Two Crude (Crude Busters)

And many others.

And we haven’t even mentioned other platforms like J2ME (aka Java)—there are plenty
of interesting games there, too, that have the potential to be ported to OpenBOR.

Yes, true!
My liking for Violent storm is because of the big sprites, the reasonable amount of characters, the fact most of the content is already ripped.
And the music is so freaking cool.

But sure so many arcade games could be great in openbor. Good choices! ^^

Where to find a "list" J2ME Java fighting/beat em up games ?
I'm pretty noobish to them.

Speaking of Vendetta/Crime Fighters 2, hopefully the other knife-wielding punk (the one with the red mohawk, blue tank top, orange jeans, shades and headphones) can be ripped and ported to OpenBOR (not sure if he is already) as well so that all of the Dead End Gang will be available. Mind you, I have the dreaded real-life syndrome just like the rest of us and am busy with work and various other things, so if someone else wants to do it, knock yourself out. And I agree it would be great to fully port Combatribes to OpenBOR as well, especially if someone makes a more brutal version of it.

J2ME Java fighting/beat em up games
There's some interesting java games, the only problem is about how to get the sprites.

Currently I'm prioritizing Master System and Mega Drive games because I have the proper tools to extract assets.
But I accept suggestions about tools that can do the job for other platforms. For example, for arcade assets I commonly use an old WinKawaks version in which I can enable/disable layers individually.

The latest standalone version of FBNeo actually includes a "Shot Factory" feature that supports layer-by-layer sprite extraction. Its main advantage is that it supports most arcade boards and platforms, allowing to extract assets from home consoles like the Megadrive and SNES as well.
