Hey everyone,
Pretty new to this community but was thinking of making a beatemup game with OpenBOR from scratch.
From scratch I mean everything, audio, sprites, healthbars, backgrounds, menus, graphics etc.
I am just interested in getting to know a bit about the setup of a beat em up and use the skeleon that is

Would I be allowed to sell it or is openBOR within some license?

Im sorry if this has already been answered but spent a decent amount of time roaming this page and the internet and couldnt find an answer newer than 2020.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the community @webdevweb,

Would I be allowed to sell it or is openBOR within some license?

Well it's been a little while, guess we were due for another one of these. :)

Im sorry if this has already been answered but spent a decent amount of time roaming this page and the internet and couldnt find an answer newer than 2020.

No worries, but the answer hasn't changed since then. Yes, you can sell an OpenBOR game. We don't try to claim any ownership over your content. The only thing the engine license requires is you provide the engine's source code on request, which basically just means sending someone a link to our repository. Note, the engine source code, not your personal content or scripts.

We do have a soft rule that somewhere your game has a "powered By OpenBOR" splash screen, but how that happens is up to you.

Oh - and as a bit of advice, if you're about to start a technical question with "is it possible", don't. The answer is always "yes". Whatever you want to do in the realm of sprite based gaming on OpenBOR, you can. So you you want to make something in your game, just ask us how. Chances are it's already been done, and we'll be glad to help. :)

Good luck on your new journey!

Talk to @Kratus, he made a really nice looking one for his Streets of Rage projects (which if you haven't tried, you need to right now), and he's been graciously allowing others to use.
