A build and play tower defense mod idea

Ok, so one mod I've kept under wraps and barely worked on was gonna be a basic tower defense based game, except you are actually the attacker, while the enemies defend. After playing Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGo5I83KIt8
and seeing footage of Starhawk: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=21DPSv4mvg8
I started changing my idea to both sides playing defense and offense like R&C, but with huge maps and the build and play elements from Starhawk(Which I only know through trying to main as Emmet Graves on PlayStation All-Stars, who can drop turrets and different weapon cases), to set your own turrets, traps, etc in any part of the stage.
The towers on both sides will spawn entities(set to chase) at the same rate, but the enemies being tougher with more damaging attacks, to keep you on your toes as well as keep your expendable allies in mind, knowing that you could lose your tower if there's not enough action on your part, and I think delaying your respawn when you die would help. You would be encouraged to kill as many enemies as you can, pick up dropped money, and take it back to your base to buy traps, defenses, weapons or stronger allies, which will be set to attack 4 as a weapon, in which you can place anywhere on the map. The goal of the game would not only be to take down the enemy tower, but to own the battlefield before doing so.
Since i have too many projects, the characters in this game would come from RPGs, using sprite sheets I can get my hands on from spriters resource.

What do you guys think about the idea? I'm pretty sure much of this wont be too hard to pull off, but the part about using money is still an issue for me at the moment.

You're right, setting money system is easy but 'using money' system is tough. You have to make defense system or any system you want to purchase with money 1st.

My suggestion for you is try making simpler mod without money system but it has all defense system implemented.

Yeah, you don't have to mimic everything other games do.
For example, a plant vs zombie game is suitable for a point and click style control, but when playing with a keyboard, it is not the best solution to simulate a pointer. Instead, you can design a hauler character, control it to pick up item and place in desired place. So you can walk/run/avoid zombies/whatever, which means more strategies.

Wasn't aware that someone replied, lol.

True, but after buying and playing Starhawk, the game actually uses an MP like mechanic(Which you get by standing near your base, summoning a post, smashing drums or killing enemies) to summon whatever you want around you, and that could be a lot simpler then trying to do it Ratchet and Clank style. I would just have to set enemies to drop MP fueling items and boxes that eventually respawn on their own. Also, I was thinking of having each character having a loadout specific to them. For example, one guy spawns a turret that shoots fire and a monster that's slow but strong, but another character's turret shoots ice and can spawn a monster that's fast but weak. This would eliminate the need to run back and forth to buy these when you can use the free specials.

Just thought it would be a cool idea to have a mod that was a mix of the two games.  :P

I didn't think about the pointer thing, mainly because I play OpenBOR with controllers. Outside of that, I think just using MP and free specials(Pseudo Starhawk style) will do the trick, so the whole money and point and click shtick wont be needed.

If nothing else, what characters to use will be the only thing I still need to decide on.

Hmmm.... comparing your idea with Plants vs Zombies, I can see your point.
I think you need to disable auto MP recovery and use dropped suns ... eh, money or anything to recover MP instead.

For selecting plants,... eh units to deploy, you have 2 choices:
1. Limited to 6 units, each button deploys specific unit
2. More than 2 units but spare 2 buttons to select to be deployed units. One button is used to deploy

#1 doesn't require scripts while #2 does

Sounds perfect. I'm not about to start any work on it soon, but when I do, I hope you'll be able to help me with that.
Still, the game setting and characters to use is all I still need to decide on. Maybe I should just mix it up and the theme will be a stage by stage basis, and just randomize the characters.
