I'm really conflicted because he has SOME cool moves but.. he looks really, REALLY slow for Vega. Maybe it's cause the overall gameplay in this game has always been slow (which I always hated), but I always expected some characters to break the mold and feel faster. In fact, I think Liu Kang is probably way faster than Vega from what I remember. It's been a gripe I've had since the game first came around that enemies just always have speed/advantage frames and stuff, while the players are just always SO SLOW. It's one of those games where I feel if it was faster and my reflexes were allowed to actually do their thing, I could play it. But even just watching a video, it still looks so painfully slow I just KNOW I can't play it. And even beyond that, it's been a long time since Vega was announced and seeing his moveset, at least in this video, it doesn't seem to do him justice. He has a couple of somewhat iconic things but he also just feel a bit lame and mechanically he feels lower quality than other characters, and he feels like he's been penalized by the pace of the game. It's like if you were to put Sonic the Hedgehog in a game and then reduce his speed to next to nothing to 'balance' him. Sure Sonic might fit the game mechanics, but would anybody want to play a heavily nerfed Sonic? No. That's how I feel about Vega. I was expecting a speed demon that lept around the screen and had very fast evasive maneouvres but he's so slow he looks like a handicapped version of Vega :/ This game has always felt slow to the point where the player is always disadvantaged, but Vega REALLY showcases it in these videos. With all due respect, even the developer does not appear to be able to play him well, like this video did not feel like a showcase of how poweful Vega can be. It looked like somebody who had never played him before messing around. And that has always been a red flag for me; if a developer cannot play their own game/character with skill, with HOURS and HOURS of experience and developing a character (something I'm very familiar with), then surely it is too hard for the average gamer who doesn't have all the time the dev has to playtest? It's not a good look, I'm afraid. Which is a shame because I've followed and wanted this game to do well for a long time.
I thought Vega's release would make me wanna play the game again for the first time in ages but it's acturally solidified the notion that I don't think this game can be salvaged for me at this point :/ One of the fastest acrobatic icons in Street Fighter reduced to a snail.
As always, I respect your opinion, and all feedback is welcome.
However, since we are talking about a fan game rather than a commercial title, it’s worth noting that this my personal vision for the game might appeal to some while not to others, that’s the case for you, and I respect that. Personally, though, I am very happy with the result.
That’s the whole point of making a game yourself, isn’t it?
Creating something just as you imagine it and bringing it to life...
And there is one thing I feel is important to clarify:
Just because the gameplay doesn’t match your expectations, it doesn’t mean I don’t know how to properly handle or create the character.
The speed of the gameplay reflects exactly what I want to see; I have no interest, in nor do I enjoy a fast paced rhythm.
As for the video, the goal was to showcase all the possible moves within a short clip, which is why the gameplay might not look entirely natural.
Regarding the time that has passed since I first announced the character and the time it took to finally show it in a finished state, well, that’s simply what happens when a single person is responsible for an entire fangame.
If even commercial projects often face delays, it’s only logical that a fangame developed by one person, who also has a life outside of game creation, might take longer than expected to reveal new updates.
Thank you very much for your honest words.
