Welcome to the community @jet . The short answer is if you are about to ask a question with "can", or "possible" in it, don't bother. The answer is always yes. Skip to the part where you ask "how" instead. :)

As for details, the stage layout wouldn't be too difficult. You'd make the ring using a native platform command, while the area around it would be the base stage. Ring ropes would need some collision detection and script to animate them on contact and trigger climbing/falling through/bouncing off depending on the situation, but it's nothing too complex.

There's already a well established set of scripts for the wrestling and grappling, so that one shouldn't be a problem either. We can get into more granular explanations as you go.

Hi @jet , take a look at this:
This is just an alpha demo with Nature Boy but it's possible to make a full game (Battle Royale and beat em up style) with all these characters if you are truly motivated:

I let you test this alpha demo if you wish to :

oh, really cool

Doable in bothg engines, but not much easy. In OpenBOR, it would be way easier - not a run in the park, but easier.

I will not lie.
I'm impressed, really.

Perhaps it will give me a bit more of motivation to get into my project again.

@jet , i would recommend using openbor if you want your wrestling game to be 4 players.

it would be nice if you could pull off a 6 vs 6 on the ring battle mode, (2 cpu partners & 4 human vs 6 cpu enemies)

in a bit of off topic, i had thoughts of making a wrestling game using wrestlemania 2000 and no mercy as a source for movesets and animations
(pretty much ripping the graphics from the create a wrestler menus and move selection screens)

After actually testing.
The demo have a lot of potential.
A big part of the ripping assets and tedious stuffs is already done.(y)
You did well @kimono

Now, what is needed is that someone with good / advanced scripting skills can add actual wrestling mechanics to this simple demo.
-get in the ring / out of the ring (without jumping)
-interaction of referee
-rope interaction, (Irish whip...)
-ring out count
-pinning system
-turnbuckle interaction (climb on it, beiing stun in the corner...)
-enemies AI with specific goals (depending on game/match type)
-interaction with objects/items/obstacles
-dive, flying attacks from turnbuckle
-Giving actual stable and not buggy coding for the ring platform (sprite layer, boxes, interaction...)

All these things would make this demo a true wrestling game/Openbor game with wrestling mechanics.
I know ALL these things are possible.
I know some creator with good / advanced scripting skills can do it without major problem.
And I know this guy is NOT ME 😅

Basically, if this demo can be updated with these mechanics, it would open a large possibility of wrestling mods creation.
@jeremiah.cuff 's Realbout Pro Wrestling would become something more unique, @jet can create his game, my own WA Project would be possible, and many other unique projects can emerge.

Thank you so much for the alpha demo, @kimono! I admit. This is something I did plan to make a boss battle in the wrestling ring for my Dragon Duo game before, but I didn't know how to do scripts at that time. If I go back to my oldest project or test some experiment, I think it's gonna be fun to fiddle with it.

I wonder how long it would take for someone with scripting skills to add main wrestling mechanics to this demo.
Particularly considering that Kimono did a great work gathering all the needed assets for it.

But after thinking about it, I think it would require too much time from such programmers to make at least the main mechanics stable enough.
And I can understand it. Making something that the engine is not meant for has always been a problem for me.

OpenBOR is a dream come true: this game brings together 38 wrestlers from 7 different titles—*WWF Raw* (SNES, Genesis, 32X), *Super WrestleMania* (SNES, Genesis), *Rage in the Cage* (Sega CD), and *WWF Betrayal* (GBC).Various modes are available, including One-on-One, Tag Team, Fatal 4-Way (9 ring-based matches, the last of which takes place inside a cage), and "Betrayal"—a beat-'em-up mode featuring a short storyline.
I’m looking for beta testers to provide player feedback before the 1.0 release, and to help hunt down any lingering bugs that might still be hiding somewhere! ;)

Boo, how naughty is this Papa Shango to set fire to his opponent's boots!

Great job with the select screen :)
I played the "WWF WrestleMania: Steel Cage Challenge" in my Master System a lot and always thought of remaking this game with some improvements.

Thanks in any case for the colorful life bars created for this game and @Bloodbane for the system to stay lying on the ground and to get out by a command by getting up or rolling up or down :) (I would like you to let me know about the improvements you were planning for this game if it is not too indiscreet).

It's a license that speaks to a lot of people through the different consoles it has crossed.
LJN has had a bad reputation as the worst video game publisher of all time in terms of gameplay, the difficulty it offers (often one is related to the other) and the cheap games released in a hurry to coincide with certain cinematographic releases.

However, this company has also left some mythical games such as the Wrestlemania series which remains in the hearts of many players.

Thank you @NED and @dai92 for your feedback, which has helped me significantly improve the game. I have just published a version 1.0 which is of course far from perfect but which integrates the desired base: is it possible to link it as a download since I am not the author of this topic?

This is Amazing!!! I literly signed up just to test this. I will be seeing how the Linux version runs on my Steam Deck. Super excited.

** had to come back and edit **

First off, congratulations on the 1.0 release! Fantastic work bringing all these classic WWF games together!

I tested the Android version on my Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra (Android 14) and noticed something worth mentioning.

Issue: After installing and launching the Android APK, the game prompted me to select a PAK file. The Android download didn't appear to include one separately.

Workaround: Luckily, I'd also downloaded the Linux x64 version. I extracted that ZIP, located the OpenBOR PAK file, and selected it through the Android launcher.

Result: The game booted successfully! I played a quick test match with Macho Man Randy Savage, and the intro, menus, and gameplay all worked.

Not sure if requiring a separate PAK is intentional, but it might be worth including instructions for Android users.

I'm transferring the Linux version to my Steam Deck next for further testing.
Fantastic project, and thanks for releasing native Linux and Android versions!

Steam Deck LCD Testing Update – Linux x64 Version 1.0

Good news! I successfully got the native Linux version running on my Steam Deck, including full physical controller support.

System:
  • Steam Deck LCD running SteamOS
  • OpenBOR Linux x64 v4.0 Build 7533 AppImage
  • Game added to Steam as a non-Steam game
Initial Issue:

The game launched correctly, played the intro, and reached the title screen. However, pressing Start immediately closed the game and returned me to Steam.

After troubleshooting, I discovered this appears to be a controller input mapping conflict rather than an actual game crash.

My Working Solution:
  1. Open the game's Properties in Steam and enable Steam Input.
  2. Change the Steam controller layout to Keyboard and Mouse.
  3. Launch the game and use the Enter key to get past the title screen and access the in-game controls.
  4. Switch back to the default Steam Deck gamepad layout.
  5. Inside OpenBOR's control configuration, manually remap the navigation controls and Start button.
  6. I had to temporarily switch between the Keyboard/Mouse and Steam Deck layouts to get the navigation and Start inputs recognized correctly.
  7. Once those inputs were configured, I could remap the remaining controls normally using the Steam Deck's physical buttons.
Result: PASS

The Linux version now launches, navigates the menus, and accepts physical controller inputs correctly on my Steam Deck!

My suspicion is that the original Start input was triggering Escape or another quit command, although I haven't confirmed the exact mapping.

Hopefully this helps other Steam Deck users experiencing the same issue.

I'll continue testing gameplay and report any additional findings. Excellent work on the project!
