I want this move from SORR v5.1 — does anyone have it?

Why not just go get it? Assets from SORR are readily available if you look around, and easily ripped otherwise. The SORR community is rather protective about their custom assets, and it's always been this community's policy to avoid promoting use of assets another community wants left alone. No one will stop you - but we're also not actively assisting.

I got it, they don’t want anyone to use their sprites, right?

Sorry for taking so long to explain — I didn’t know, and I was working on a project and used many of their sprites. Could that bother them?

It almost certainly will. It's not like they can do anything about it, and the SORR community has been somewhat antagonistic toward us since its inception. But again, at Chronocrash, we usually try to foster a policy of respect here, even to communities that don't like us. So we're not going to offer support on use of SORR assets.

That said, we don't tell our members what they can and can't do on an individual level. So what you do with your project on your own is up to you.

@Kratus, @O Ilusionista, or @danno could probably explain better than I.

I have a mantra I work by: "build bridges, instead of burning them." We already have religion and politics to separate us; we don't need to increase the separation.

As Damon explained, we can't force people to respect other people's work, since it was made using third-party IP. But we also won't help or promote it.

My advice is: ask first. Approach the people who made these sprites and talk to them. Most will allow you to use them, as long as you give credit (which is always welcome). If they prefer that it not be used momentarily or that it remain exclusive to their project, I would respect that and find another way to make the same sprite.

We had an example here in the community: there was a great Final Fight project, and a friend of mine was interested in it. Instead of adopting Mugen's "if it's on the internet, it's free" mentality (and I can say this because I come from that community), he approached the author and offered help, and a great update was released, and they even became friends.

But then a group came along, simply took the project for themselves to make a "mucho mejor" version and erased the original author's credits. This upset the author so much that he retired, and he was a super talented person. Only later did they start giving him credit – first subtly, as if he had "helped" with the game, and only later admitting that they had built it on his work.

But the damage was already done.

Just in case it comes up - why then do so many projects use assets from larger game makers? It's not because they are big and we are small. That would be making a judgement call as to who does and doesn't deserve respect, and would not have any ethical foundation.

The simple fact is almost all the larger studios just don't care, and have even come out and said so. They obviously don't want you touching their code or IP, but tend to view the assets as mostly disposable. Assuming of course, you stick to non-profit only.

One exception is French Bread, who have made it clear they DO value their assets, and for that reason you won't see projects here using them. As would be the case for any developer who asked that we leave their content alone.

Another example was the company behind Queens of Heart '98 game.
(although many people ignored this lol)

No worries, I know I went on a bit — really sorry. Since I’m kind of new to this, I want to ask: if I take the original and modify it, is that also a problem? For example, if it’s based on SORRv4, would that be an issue or is it fine? And if anyone can put me in touch with the creator, I’d be really grateful.Screenshot_٢٠٢٦-٠٢-٢٨-١٦-٣١-٠٥-٨٠_e2a481af1c5ad59f991df6cac38251b2.jpg
