I took this file from D&D - K&D - The Endless Quest LNS

I havent had such difficultly with an image file before.

The images will not load in ChronoCrash Modders Tool, the error message is

It crashes the game when it spawns with no mention in OpenBOR Log

However, the images work perfectly in D&D - K&D - The Endless Quest LNS the game.

I attached the image and the entire folder from the game.

Can anyone see what is wrong with this file? cause other files work from this game

Also just wanted to add, I had tried to
1. generate a palette for it myself with GIMP
2. use the original palette and use it directly in my game
3. @kimono helped me generate a 256 palette using Photofiltre Studio 11

all of which still did not work, same result

Wow, that is indeed a mess.
  1. The slime + transparency is 9 colors total, so there's no reason for that huge jumbled up palette.
  2. The alternate colors should be expressed with palettes, not included on the sheet. Also, the alts are one color short.
  3. LNS.
Here's a package with the cleaned up sheet, and alternate palettes. When you cut, make sure you save each slice as an 8bit .png with the default palette I provided. Then use OpenBOR's alternatepal command for other palettes. Reference the ACT files directly, you don't need to make images of them.

Code:
palette data/chars/slime/slime_default_0.ACT
alternatepal data/chars/slime/slime_violet_0.ACT
alternatepal data/chars/slime/slime_green_0.ACT
alternatepal data/chars/slime/slime_yellow_0.ACT

Also, stay away from LNS, that's poisoned fruit. It's unprofessional of me to harsh on another community, but sometimes a duck is a duck. Aside from the shady behavior, they're just not particularly adroit. If you need resources, come to us first and we can probably find you the clean versions.

thanks a lot!

I didn't know what LNS was, I always thought it was a mode or something (like Street Fighter vs Street Fighter Turbo) :P

Read some threads on it now, good to know!

@Aerisetta

Gimp has a problem where an image that has a low color palette gets saved but it does not work in openbor.

i had an entity that was black and white/greyscale with about 9 shades, gimp would save it but it would crash openbor -

the only way i made it work was to make a white to black gradient layer, hide it and then export the imagea as 256 color or 255 color palette.

-

the way @DCurrent solved it (8 bit) its the proper way to fix such issues, but i wonder how mcuh you have to manually edit the palettes, and if there is a anything faster....

@oldyz,

All 8bit palettes are 256 colors whether you use them or not. Gimp didn't corrupt anything, nor is there a palette bug in OpenBOR. You just didn't have an 8bit color image.

In Photoshop unused color table entries default to RGB 000. IIRC Gimp will try to save with a lesser color depth, which OpenBOR doesn't allow. You don't need to add filler colors, just watch your settings.

As for the process, no there's nothing better or faster. You just have to learn the tools. Took me less than two minutes to fix this, and once that's done the palette application can be automated.

It is like the original Street Fighter II VS Street Fighter II: Rainbow Edition. Capcom has/had a reason to dislike/disapprove Rainbow Edition as this community dislikes LNS version.

@oldyz: It's like what DC said about the use of colors. What I do to palettes/images in .png is to increase up to 17 total indexed colors and save it, even though the image is/has less than 17 colors. There's no need for leaving it all with 256 color boxes per image. If you leave it to just 16 color boxes or less, it will crash in OpenBOR. Gif is a different story, so you'll have no problem using them since it accepts small number of color boxes.

My Mod - 0874.png

What I found out is that saving these small .png files with 17 colors are nearly 500 bytes bigger than the ones in gifs. It's true that .png files get decompressed to smaller file size, but sometimes they become the opposite of what they're supposed to be, especially with little bigger size.

This will be fixed with newer versions of openbor for now you could use gif or just make sure your image has more then 16 indexed colours for png.

@DCurrent & @maxman

thanks i will look into the settings in Gimp -
altho i tried everything i could that day to fix the problem on that machine in particular,
everytime i would export the files other image programs wold give me weird info o them and that is why i figured openbor would not handle them.

gimp has given me troubles before on other projects - troubles that where not an issue when i was using photoshop cs3.

later on i will try to look up the "lesser color depth issue" and do some tests

Is there a guide somewhere that explains what you did? Actually I don't even know what an ACT file is

This is strange, I have images that vary from 1 to 255 colors on its palette and they are working fine. I already had some crashes but only when using indexed png images that have no correct palette applied or in case I make some changes that modify colors on the image. But can be quickly solved by using the PalApply v203, you can reapply the correct palette to thousands of images in seconds using batch manipulation.

Is there a tool that can take a 32 bit png image and pick the optimal palette very well?

I've been using gimp. It doesn't do a good job at it, sometimes indexing a color with only 2 pixels relevant while missing complete chunks of detail

@Aerisetta As a suggestion you can try different custom palette options when converting the image to indexed format.

In case Gimp doesn't solve the problem, you can try the Irfanview app.

There is a issue with gimp if you save a indexed image without a alpha channel you get a random extra colour added to your indexed palette.
