Someone just released an easy-to-use, modular 3D Sonic Game Engine!

https://youtu.be/JvbYzFBMPE8

* Classic-style physics
* Adjustable Speed, acceleration, momentum, handling...
* 10 Playable Characters
* Adventure gameplay
* Easy terrain construction.
* In-Engine tutorials

This engine is a great idea, and really needs more support.

Brilliant work... but why in the world would they tie it to someone else's IP? Might as well walk into Sega's legal office and type up the C&D yourself.

Take out the Sonic shackles and the engine has a ton of potential. I'd like to see it running something like a motocross or arcade style BMX game.

Judging from the youtube user profile, it's a sonic fan, catering to his primary userbase: Sonic fans.

It would be neat if Sega just ditched Sonic Team as Christian Whitehead and his friends proved that they can do what ST couldn't with Sonic Forces, and put these people in charge of the "modern" Sonic games.

But business is business, and if Sega just gave it the same care things like Project X Zone had...

I have to agree with DC. Specially when they say "it's entirely open source", when it's not.

I can imagine one can gut the game of copyrighted content and work on an original IP from there. See Fark the Electric Jester.

If I am understanding correctly, the playable characters are hard-coded. Still possible to get them out but if they were trying to optimize much as possible for speed it may be difficult.

Either way, still applaud the work. Some really nice base mapping and physics they've got going.

No surprise if the characters are hard-coded. It's clearly obvious that they're pandering to the Deviantart the Fandom more than anything.
That aside, it's perfect. SEGA could use this to their advantage, and if I was CEO or anything I'd put those people on my payroll. Why? Look at Sonic Mania and you'll understand.
