Has any openbor developer ever attempted to recreate Spider-Man: The Video Game (Arcade) 1991 version?

Has any openbor developer ever attempted to recreate Spider-Man: The Video Game (Arcade) 1991 version specifically for Openbor? I would love to see Zvitor give it a shot. I really like his openbor games or anyone else qualified.

I wish I knew how to create openbor games (I don't know how to program at all) or I would tackle this project myself.

Anyways, it was just a random thought I had today. And I decided to just create a thread to hear some thoughts or opinions on this. Love the forum by the way and thank you all in advance for having me.

No one has attempted this one specifically, so far as I know. We do like to occasionally poke fun at bad back Spider Man though. :ROFLMAO:

The problem of course, is the zooming out to platform mode and back again. If you ignore that aspect in a remake, then why bother at all? I imagine most creators would just opt to make the close/far sections into separate levels, but that reeks of laziness. It would also remove one of the key features of an otherwise pretty crap tier game. So again, why bother?

The engine can of course do all those things no problem, but that's not the challenge. Zooming effects as a core part of gameplay have to be engineered and planned very carefully and all in advance to get right. Gathering up a bunch of sprites, throwing in some scaling effects and calling it a day won't get the job done. Not even close.

I figured that was the issue. Had to ask though. Game is terrible, but I still like to come back to it from time to time. Plus, its more nostalgia than anything for me.

Especially, since I wasted so many quarters on this game back in the day in my corner store that rotated out different arcade machines, this was obviously one of them haha. But thank you for letting me know the real reason why this game has never been attempted DC.

While we don't have that one specifically, there are some pretty amazing games here with Spiderman. You should browse our resources and check them out.

Thanks, I will definitely take a look. Little off topic? But DC you're the site owner and basically in charge of OPENBOR and its development. What do you consider to be the top 5 must play Openbor games period? Or what are your five favorite openbor games?

Ah, you mean the beat 'em up with the worst mechanics in gaming history? We know it :)

Sega, at the time, had a mix of a terrible idea and greed to have a game where the life bar... is the game's timer. You lose energy by getting hit by someone, by hitting someone, by walking... even by standing still.

I remember playing this game in arcades, but it was a horrible experience. You can only really enjoy it on an emulator.

The game itself has nice graphics, but the gameplay gets repetitive easily and has some very bad physics issues.

I had to rip some sprites from this game for my Avengers game and, as far as I remember, the sprites reduced via zoom are stored at a smaller size in the ROM. So you have to upscale if you want to use the exclusive moves from that area, like Black Cat's hook.

I think that's what I'm looking for or referring to. A beat em up with a mix of double dragon and street of rage mechanics with the sprites (graphics, when the characters are at full size) and sound effects of Spiderman the Arcade Game. Yea the gameplay and mechanics weren't the best, but I loved the graphics, bosses and enemy types. I'm going to try some of the Marvel games. Also, thank you for the insight.

I've played this game on emulator and it feels repetitive. The thing I enjoyed from the game is seeing various marvel supervillains.

Anyways, as for recreating, it would be really tough to do. Replacing zoom in and out with changing level could reduce the burden but there's still climbing mechanic which is tough to do. I've attempted making it before but got stuck somewhere. Haven't revisited it again though.

What about just making the game with the sprites (graphics) when the characters and enemies are at full size only? Without the zooming in, out and climbing mechanics? Sorta like Captain America and the Avengers arcade game just with the sprites (graphics) of Spiderman the video game when they're at full size?

To be honest I hated the levels when you zoom out and you're extra small. Is Openbor easy to learn if I wanted to become a creator? Or does it take advanced programming skills?

That's what I noted above though. The seamless transition between stage types is the core facet of Spiderman, and one the few cool points it actually has - if you're going to take that away, why bother remaking at all? Go find and emulator and play the original.

Similar to X-Men arcade? that should be simple.

Well, if you need to make simple beatmup, it is easy to learn.
However, more often than not, developers usually start asking for unique features which require coding or scripting.
