Final Fantasy Rebirth

Have fun dude, the first episode was one of those rare games where I actually like to walk around and take pictures, there's something really good about how they managed to capture the lighting. makes me real reminiscent even though I was never there.

Here's one of the pictures I took, the bridge in the background reminds me of old flats (housing) from my childhood.

Square needs to give their art department a raise. To me, it's just enough imaginative fantasy to pull you in without going over the top.

Also, holy crap Rebirth is HUGE! I spent around 8 hours on it and I've managed to uncover maybe about 10% of the first open world area, and that's including a chapter skip from playing the demo.

@DCurrent beatiful collection
I'm having trouble adapting to J-rpg modern games over the past few years, (not with zelda games) since it's more action and puzzle
but I'm very interested in trying dragon dogma 2

very tempting 🤩 have fun

...so I think it goes without saying the soundtrack would kill. SE's audio department always brings it, not just for Final Fantasy. Then I had to do a side quest escorting a dang dog, and this happened while walking the dog...

Got into a fight protecting the dog, and this happened....

...yeah. Random animal escort quest, and it gets two of its own tracks. With "bow wow wow wow" as the chorus, and somehow they're both bangers. Plus, listen closely, and it's actually the mascot propaganda theme from the evil company you're up against (they use a cute terrier named Stamp as their symbol). On top of that, you can't really hear the lyrics in game because you're too busy beating the crap of stuff. It just sounds like a fun background tune while you fight - just like real life sneaky propaganda.

Attention to tiny little details like this are the kind of things that make a game to me, and why I can seem so nitpicky as a fan.

just had a thought, wouldn't it be so cool if someone added the spell/item choice system into an openbor game, slowdown to choose item and all (i have a bullet time effect in my game that slows enemies down)

@Aerisetta

I had the same thought already, and almost coded it into my original IP. It's not all that hard if you have a solid understanding of object iteration. The basic mechanic was already there anyway well before I played Remake/Rebirth, but as a very limited, character specific ability that lets them briefly assume super speed, represented in game by everything else going bullet time while you move normally.

Ultimately though I scrapped the idea for menus/selection. It's a brilliant but very situational solution: Perfect for FF but not really appropriate for a multi-player beat em' up,. Imagine Shadow Over Mystara going bullet time whenever someone opens their menu. That's going to get fuggin' old real quick.

That said, I did adopt a modified version of the ATB system for certain characters. I'll explain how it works in more depth once I've made further progress drawing the assets.

@Aerisetta I didn't add the slow down but at least the item/spell menu is present in a prototype I made some years ago. Unlike the classic beat 'em up games, this one is different and has many rpg elements.

Sadly, Rebirth got snubbed hard at GOTY awards, taking home best score and... nothing else. Never even heard of Astro Boy. Normally I wouldn't give two spits. This is in fact the first year I even knew who won. It's just that Rebirth really took a nosedive in sales due to things beyond its control (and the boneheaded move of going exclusive on a mostly failed console).

Getting GOTY would have given it a nice boost from casuals who never tried the series and bring in some fresh blood. Sadly, that's not happening now. This makes me fear Square will take their foot off the pedal for the last chapter and phone it in. Because that's exactly the kind of knee jerk thing execs do. That and even if you hate the game, no one can deny the absolute balls to the wall effort and love the dev staff put in to every little detail. Has to be a little deflating and motivation killing when your work goes unrewarded.

Silver lining - if the middle chapter took GOTY, no way on this green earth would they let the final chapter have it, so maybe there's a chance down the road. :)

Astro Bot was my second choice, but yeah disappointed for Rebirth after the news that it didn't sell very well and all the work that went into it.

Sure but the issue is the competition this year was really manageable, it will probably be a lot harder in 2027 (or 2028) when part 3 releases. Plus I think the element of surprise will be gone, and even if part 3 will probably be the best part, it will be very similar to part 2.

I don't think Square will take their foot off the pedal for the last chapter, but I fear for the games that will come after.

Honestly I was expecting Black Myth, Elden Ring or FFVII. Astro Bot really surprised me.

but I fear for the games that will come after
+1 to it

I could understand not getting GOTY. That's always going to be a tossup. But not even best RPG? That is absolutely some politics at work. Square forgot to grease someone's palm.

I actually expected Metaphor to win for several reasons, but mainly if you look at the game awards panel, it's made up of a bunch of high brow hipster pseudo intellectual game academics. Something as flashy and mass market as FF7R is sure to be ignored.

Metaphor is brand new IP, their creative direction in terms of visual and audio is innovative and strong, the game overall is very strong start to about 80% where it reverted back to standard JRPG story. I finished it in 80 hours. No way its as iconic as FF7, but it's reasonable for it to win RPG of the year.

FF7 is amazing and huge on the fan service, and I don't mean just TnA, but how it delivers on "this is what I remember from 30 years ago!!!" Or "this is exactly what I wish happened 30 years ago!" But pseudo intellectual critics usually look down on that sort of thing.

In that case, I'm surprised Persona got totally snubbed. Not my cup of tea at all, but interesting and fairly innovative take on the genre.

*Edit:* Then I read more and see it's pretty much a spiritual successor to Persona. Never mind. :P

Metaphor is actually Persona. Same team, same director, new IP and creative direction but gameplay and structure is very similar.

Yeah, see my edit. I read about it right after I posted and... I was like... Oh it IS Persona!

I'm currently playing Rebirth chapter 7 and the game is mostly solid in all fronts but I have one major gripe with it... the excessive padding especially in Chapter 6 but that card mini game made my poor little brain hurt lol.

You could have ignored it. The entire tournament is optional. But I just had to make Tifa, Aerith, and Red cry. :)
